The practical details for getting your own media onto your screen.
What you need
A supported Meta Quest headset, your own compatible media, and a computer or NAS running a compatible UPnP/DLNA media server on the same local network. Keep the server running while watching. JustScreen runs on the headset; no PC VR connection is needed.
Normal local browsing and playback do not require a JustScreen cloud service or internet connection. Meta’s platform services and any online services used independently by your media server are separate.
JustScreen does not include movies, a streaming subscription or streaming-service sign-ins. The example media shown on the product page is not a bundled catalogue.
Connect your library
- Share your media. Enable UPnP/DLNA sharing on your media server.
- Connect your headset. Join the same local network, open JustScreen, and allow discovery and library import to finish.
- Find your film. Choose a movie or episode and adjust the screen. Refresh the library when you add content or start a server later.
If the library stays empty, check that the server is running and sharing is enabled. Then check local-network permissions, the firewall, guest-network isolation and VPN routing. JustScreen does not need public internet access to your media server or port forwarding.
Supported local providers
JustScreen uses compatible UPnP/DLNA media-server functionality in Kodi, Jellyfin, Plex and Synology setups, where available and enabled. Some installations need a separate DLNA component. This is not a native account integration or a guarantee that every server version works.
Movies and TV shows from supported local providers appear in one unified library. The information available for each title depends on what its server supplies.
Optional Kodi enrichment
Kodi can supply richer local metadata through its HTTP/HTTPS JSON-RPC interface. This is separate from playback. If the server requires credentials, the optional Kodi Details notice lets you connect; you can ignore it and continue using basic DLNA playback.
Descriptions, artwork, genres, studios, cast, credits and technical track information appear when the local server supplies them. Sparse metadata does not prevent browsing or playback. JustScreen does not fetch missing artwork or film information from public internet metadata services.
JustScreen is an independent app, not an official client of these server products.
Video and audio compatibility
Play your own 2D video and choose supported audio tracks in the player. Compatible 3D layouts are described below.
Playback depends on the file’s container and codecs, your media server, and the headset’s decoders. An MKV or MP4 extension alone does not guarantee playback. A technical badge describes supplied media information; it is not a guarantee that the headset can decode the file.
When several versions exist, AUTO may try another compatible resource. A manually chosen version does not silently switch to a different one. If a format is unsupported, use another available version or supported audio track.
JustScreen does not transcode files, play disc images or provide an external surround/Atmos output.
3D playback
Compatible side-by-side and top/bottom packed-frame video is supported, including half and full layouts. Recognised metadata and saved per-version settings determine the view; use the available 3D controls to correct the layout when necessary.
Blu-ray MVC/frame-packed video, disc images, and 180-degree or 360-degree video are not supported.
Subtitles
Supported embedded text-subtitle tracks can be selected or turned off in the player. PGS, VobSub and other image-based subtitles are not currently rendered. External subtitle-file browsing and subtitle downloads are not included.
Captions already burned into a video’s picture cannot be switched off.
Screen and playback controls
Start with a TV, Home Cinema, IMAX or Planet Scale screen preset, then adjust size, distance, curve and height. Recenter when needed and save screen profiles for the views you want to use again. These presets change your screen; JustScreen does not build a theatre environment around you.
Pause, seek and choose supported audio and text-subtitle tracks in the player. Use Quest controllers or direct-touch hands.
To bring back the controls, press the controller’s Menu button, normally on the left controller. With hands, turn your non-dominant palm towards the headset and pinch thumb and index together to use Quest’s app-menu gesture. Touch controls directly and swipe to scroll.
The Meta button and dominant-hand system gesture open Quest’s own menus.
History, settings and privacy
Playback history, preferences, screen profiles, artwork caches and optional saved media-server credentials stay on your headset. Open Library → Privacy for the local deletion controls.
You can clear artwork, playback history or saved credentials separately. Clear All Local Data, followed by confirmation, also removes JustScreen’s preferences, screen profiles, caches and remembered servers. A clear operation stops playback and reopens the library. It does not delete your movies or change your media server.
